I have the following problem:
Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
Is it possible to do a WIN XP Pro reinstall from a CD to solve the problem?
The PC is from a school lab with a system license and I wanted to do it at
home with my CD of XP pro. Will that work, like it does with WIN98?
OR
do I have to do the procedure described in:
How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from
starting
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307545
Thanks
Michael

That MS knowledge base article contains the procedure to follow.

Follow the article. In step one you should only need to copy
\windows\repair\system to \windows\system32\config\ directory.

but first try renaming \windows\system32\config\system.alt as
\windows\system32\config\system

Hi,Dave.
In my Windows Xp, \windows\system32\config\system.alt does not exist.
Can you tell why .
Thanks

I think system.alt is no more for Windows XP and above.
