We have a new PC with Windows XP Professional installed.

I named the computer with the user's full name. He is
still using his old PC which is named the same as his
NT user account.

When I try to connect to the network with the new XP
PC, it assumes the logon user name of the computer name.
When I try to change the user name to his NT user name
(without the computer name\in front of it)it will not
accept that, even if I say to logon as another user,
it puts the computer name ahead of the user name.

Is there a way around this without re-naming his old
PC name so that we can use it on the new PC?

Thanks,

Sandy

Don't completely understand your problem. But one possible solution could
be to specify <old machine name>\<NT user account> when trying to connect to
his old PC. Let us know if it solves the issue. If not, please give us
more details on the problem.

Sorry - This is what I am talking about.

Say that John Doe got a new computer. His old
computer name is JDOE. His NT user account on
the server is also JDOE, so when he connects to
the network, his user name is JDOE.

We named his new computer JohnDoe.

When we try to connect to the network server, it
automatically assumes that the user name is JohnDoe.
If we try to type over JohnDoe with his correct user
name (jdoe) to logon to the network server, it adds
that in front of the computer name and tries to log
him in as JohnDoe\jdoe.

Even if we try to map a drive and say to connect as
another user, for example user bgibson, it asks for
user credentials for the computer name\bgibson
(JohnDoe\bgibson).

We would like to keep the new computer named
JohnDoe and don't want to rename the old computer
(jdoe), but we cannot get logged on to the network
server on the new computer.

Hope this makes more sense and hope that you can help!

Thanks,

Sandy
