Windows wont boot windows\system32\config\system corrupt or missing

Andrew

I am in desperate need of help
I went to boot my PC and the following error occured
after post

\windows\system32\config\system corrupt or missing

I then booted from the windowsXP pro SP1 CD to the
recovery console.
I tried to find this file - all I get is
An error occured during directory enumeration

I have used the windows backup tool to save all of my
data in a bkf file on another disk on the machine. I used
the wizard and said to backup all the data and settings.
Please tell me how to recover without having to rebuild
the system. that would be a killer.
I didnt make any ASR diskettes. That wil change next time

Thank you for the site. When I try to rename system it
tells me I have a directory enumeration error?? I cant
rename or delete or copy for that matter? anything in the
config folder.

Andy

Any more help would be appreciated! I have a bunch of
real important data - yes its backed up but I would have
to rebuild the entire system ugh...

Do what is called, an in place upgrade. Just basically reload your operating system. It will Reccomend an Upgrade and only do an upgrade, other wise it will wipe out your software. Once you do the upgrade it will replace your missing files and be its old self again. Go to Microsoft Update and load all the patches. You will find it under tools on your internet browser. (Always use Virus software updated weekly and if you do not have a router use a firewall unless your on a modem.

Search MS Knowledgebase for an article called something like - How to start
up from corrupted registry file.

Thanks a million Terrance - The inplace upgrade solved
the problema and I still have all of my data and
everything is hunky dory. This saved my sooo much time vs
reloading the os from scratch.

Thanks a millon terrance. This saved me soo much time.
MS support didnt even suggest this. they focused on ren
and copying files (which by the way didnt work).
