I am at my witts end with my computer. It was fine
earlier today, and now I can not get into windows. I get
to my welcome screen where you choose your login ID, and
when I click on my name, I get different messages, some
of which are the following:

"A problem is preventing windows from accurately checking
the license for this computer. Error code: 0x800405aa"

or

"This version of windows must be activated with microsoft
before you can log on. Do you wish to activate windows
now?"

My windows has been activated since I installed it
forever ago. This must be a virus. How the hell do I fix
this? I was able to get windows to start up once in safe
mode, and at that point I ran adaware to weed out any
bugs, and it only found 1 reg file, which was deleted. I
then ran a full system scan with norton
antivirus 2004 and it found 8 at risk files. It was only
able to delete 1 of the files, and it ignored the other
7. What do I do??? Please help!

Find the location of the files that Norton say are infected. That should be
displayed after Norton has finished its system scan. If they are files which
you know shouldn't be there you should be able to delete them. Norton does
find it difficult to delete files that are in temp locations

1. did you change drive letter?
2. dhcp needs to be reset if networked computer (lan)
3. problem with provider certificate (common w/some dell's)
4. oembios.bin in /system32 may be corrupt
5. fix mbr (master boot record) in case did some drive partitioning
6. sometimes from norton 2004 or a new install of norton av.

those are some of the hints I got by googling...(use the phrase you got)
www.google.com
""A problem is preventing windows from accurately checking
the license for this computer"
or

"This version of windows must be activated with microsoft
before you can log on. Do you wish to activate windows
now?"

pretty well same list as above

If necessary...you can use the original installation CD and do an
"upgrade"...or try repair when booting computer from CD.
But again...maybe one of above items is cause and fixable.

How do I start up my computer in safe mode in order to
run Norton again. The only way I was able to do it before
was because it said windows did not load properly last
time, so would you like it to load in safe or normal, and
I chose safe. Is there a way to start it up in safe
whenever i want. Because otherwise, I wont be able to get
into windows to see where those temps files are??!!

Keep pressing F8 during startup. you should then get options as to which
mode you wish to startup in. Best is safe mode without networking.

Say yes to the activation and choose "activate by telephone" Internet Explorer opens. Ignore all the activation stuff but type C: in the url. You can then browse to system restore (C:\WINDOWS\system32\Restore\rstrui.exe)and restore to a previous point. Or try Ctrl+Alt+Delete and go to the File menu, New task, Run. Type this: %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe.

Then, please read about securing your PC here: http://www.uksecurityonline.com/husdg/windowsxp/wxpp2.php
