Windows Update Problem After Service Pack 2 ?

M

Martin Harran

Since I installed Service Pack 2, when I go to Windows Update, I usually get
the "Checking for the latest version of the Windows Update software" screen
and nothing else happens. Tried Refresh but it makes no difference. Once,
clicking on a 'back' button I got th page with two links showing 'Automatic
Scan' and 'Custom Scan' but neither of them did anything.

I have my Automatic Updates set to "notify me when downloads are ready" as I
always like to check anything before it is installed on my PC.

It's worrying me that in the 10 days or so since I installed SP2, I have
received no notifications of Updates or been able to check on the site and
I'm wondering if maybe I did something wrong in my setup.

Try this. I found this on another newsgroup & it worked for me. I too had
disabled mine. Once I enabled it, the page came up. Worth a try. Too bad
Microsoft didn't give instructions on this Add On Manager !

Seems I had inadvertently messed with my Add-On management. The
WuWebControlClass was disabled. I enabled it this way:

Open Internet Explorer, go to Tools,Manage Add-Ons... make sure your
WuWebControlClass entry is listed
under the Enabled section. If it's under Disabled, find the radio button for
Enable, and enable it!. Fixed me up quick!

Hi

Fyi, microsoft.public.windowsupdate is a better newsgroup for
Windows Update questions.

You could try the steps in this post to try to get WU to work:

If nothing there worked, try the steps in this post:

Just to let you know I've eventually got this solved.

For some reason, when I click on Windows Update from the Start menu, it
takes me to http:// ... it should be https://...

Thanks to those who made other suggestions.

Now ... anyone know how I get my Update from Start menu to point to the
secure site?
