Windows update not working

When I go to Windows Update I get a page with the following text

"Checking for the latest version of the Windows Update software...

Depending on your connection speed, this might take a minute. During this
time, you may receive one or more security warnings. Review each security
warning to ensure that the content is signed by Microsoft, and then click
Install or Yes to install the software."

Then nothing happens.

The same web site on my wife's computer works just fine.

I found that a spyware blocker program called surfingguard, that I was
evaluating, was causing the problem.
I removed surfingguard and the update works again.

The correct spelling of the spyblocker should be "surfinguard".
