\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

Kelly,

I tried doing what you said but when I get to

Type dir system, and then press ENTER

The conputer says Invalid Path or Filename

And when I type ren system system.bak, the computer also says invalid path
or filename.

I tried only ren system.bak but it says something like "Outside parameters"
I'm not sure what to do now. Does it make a difference if the computer I am
repairing is WIndows XP Home and I am repairing it with a XP Professional CD?
I don't have the home CD anywhere.

Thanks,
Matt

Also, what attributes should CONFIG\SYSTEM have? Should it be a system (s),
ready to be archived (a), etc.?

You have to get into the config directory first. If your prompt has
something in C: give
CD \Windows\system32\config
You can then do things like Dir and ren on the files in it. If you do
not have a prompt in C start with
C:
on its own first

The files do not have any of the Attributes set (apart from Archive,
which does not matter)
