Windows locked up when sitting idle

This may be useful to someone. I built a computer with a barebones kit and
used an NVIDIA TNT/TNT2 AGP graphics card. Windows found drivers for it and
it seemed to work fine. Only problem was that if I left the computer on
overnight or left it idle for any appreciable length of time, it would
freeze up. In device manager the display adapter was listed as NVIDIA
TNT/TNT2 (Microsoft Corporation). After experimenting with other remedies,
I decided to go to the NVIDIA site and download the recommended driver for
it. That cured the problem. It's been running for a week now and hasn't
frozen up yet. Device Manager no longer has "(Microsoft Corporation)"
appended to the device either....

I have run into LOTS of problems using Microsoft's drivers instead of the
manufacturer's drivers. But to be honest, what I most appreciated about your
post is the "Freudian slip" tag line. I am going to save that one!

The stock XP drivers should never be used, they're very much get the system
up and running on the bare bones, so the user can then install the latest
drivers from the hardware manufacturers.

Kelly likes to tear apart my tag lines, but she hasn't commented on this
one yet... :-)
