Installer was working fine until just recently. Now when
I attempt to install programs, I get a message that the
installer is not properly configured. I've checked to
ensure the service is started. Please help; all
suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

I am getting a similar message. and cannot install or uninstall anything
i had/have a backdoor trojan attack my machine, and because of this msi problem, cannot install or run the fix.

Are you possibly getting a "1607, unable to install installshield scriping
runtime" error? Because I too have just had to deal with that on one of our
Windows 2000 servers, while trying to install some Canon printer monitoring
software.

I would recommend following this article:
http://support.installshield.com/kb/view.asp?pcode=ALL&articleid=Q107070

My final solution was to follow steps 5, 6, and 7, then go to:
http://www.livingcookbook.com/support/kb/kb0007.htm and download the listed
file.

Let us know if this helps,

Eric Phillips

well...that isnt the error message i am getting. now i am getting others...if i try to run an executable (a d/l of an app that is supposed to help me) it downloads fine, but then i get an error:Unable to execute file in the temporary directory. setup aborted. Error 5: access is denied
more info: there is a brief windows installer window that happens whenever i log on. my anti-virus software says there are no viruses (i recently removed backdoor.trojan).

and when it tried to run the InstmsiW.exe i donwloaded from the link, i got this error:
Error creating process
<C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1.IPD\LOCALS~1\Temp\1\IXP0000.TMP\msiinst.exe /i instmsi MSIEXECREG=1 /m /qb+!>
Reason: Access Denied.

My ISP (Comcast cable) has started installing software on my machine without
my permission and without providing information on what it is and how it
works. To make matters worse, the install "branding" on the IE title line
saying they provided the IE I'm using. Still worse, they have a pop-up
that appears everytime I start IE. They told me to do the following to
flush this stuff:

CMD box: rundll32 iedkcs32.dll,Clear

Control Panel> remove all programs with "Comcast" in their names

Start, Search> "comcast" -- then remove all directories and files it
finds.
