hi

i'm getting the following error message when i try to boot Windows XP
on my Dell 4400

'Windows could not start because the C:\windows\system32\config\system
file is missing or corrupt.'

i've found this article....

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;823614

..and followed the instructions up to stage 3 but when i type in '1'
and press enter it just freezes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

thanks

You have succombed to a virus that has corrupted your registry. Easisest
solution to reformat and reinstall.......if you have second hard disk
install second copy windows to that then boot up to that version and install
(upgrade) over previous installation. Some apps will also need
reinstallation but you will have retained prvious settings and email files
etc. Then update Windows from MS ASAP.
