Windows (computer) freezes up

Hi guys,

Hope you can help, because I am out of options or ideas. :-D Here goes!

As I play City of Heroes or any other video game, occasionally a sound would
just freeze and be stuck. Then the system freezes with that sound and I can't
do nothing. Keyboard is dead and that damn sound just loops endlessly. It's
not consistent, but it happens every few hours or so. Then I have to manually
turn the computer off and reboot. Can a sound trigger it?

Also, I have a motherboard with integrated audio which I disabled through
BIOS. I have a SB Audigy 2 on the system now.

Last note, can you share IRQs? I have 18 as "Creative SB Audigy 2 (WDM)".
Then IRQ 18 again wtih "Standard Universal PCI to USB Host Controller". Is
that ok? Or even relevant?

What I tried so far:

Re-installed my sound card/vid card with the latest drivers. Made sure the
on-board audio is disabled again.

I saw a newsgroup where a guy suggested disabling the Standard Universal IRQ
it's sharing with. Is that ok?

Thanks!

No, the sound is not triggering it. You haven't told us some important
information about your computer:

1. Processor speed
2. Amount of system memory (RAM)
3. Make/model of your video card.
4. Anything about your system except I assume it is a desktop since you
were able to put in a pci soundcard.

See my comments below about troubleshooting games.

This is not relevant any more. Your problems with the games don't have
anything to do with IRQ's.

No. The IRQ's are not your problem. Here are the general game
troubleshooting steps:

1) Be sure you have a fast processor with plenty of RAM - at least 256MB
but 512MB is better.

2)Test the RAM with Memtest86 if your computer is randomly freezing.

3)Be sure you have updated video drivers and that your video card is
adequate for 3D gameplay.

4) Be sure you have applied the latest patches for the game - get them
from the game's website or a place like FilePlanet.

5) If you continue to have problems with one specific game (as opposed
to all games), see if there are user forums where you can post for
help.

6) When you play a processor-intensive game, don't have other
applications running in the background - keep extraneous
programs/services to a minimum.

If you need more help, then please include the information I asked for
at the beginning of this post.

Cheers,

Malke
