I recently upgraded a computer (not my own) from windows 98 to windows xp,
but in the upgrade, Norton Antivirus and Microsoft Office no longer function.
I am unable to reinstall because it says I must first unistall. However,
every time I try to unistall either of these applications, the unistallation
fails. Any help or suggestion is welcome. Thank you.

As far as Norton Antivirus is concerned I know for a fact that earlier versions
that work on 98 DO NOT work in XP. I think you have to at least have Antivirus
2002 (i think) or better. Earlier 98 versions of norton are NOT compatible with
XP. You might be able to get a newer version of antivirus and just install over
the old version without having to uninstall it.

Hope this helps.

PS... Norton got smart finally as of A/Virus 2004 and now the install disks have
a unique serial on them.. heh, stops people from using one disk to install on
all computers you have.. darn them!

Hi Simon,

I wish you would have posted before upgrading, so I (or someone else) would
have told you that it is the best practice to uninstall Anti-Virus software
prior to upgrading, ESPECIALLY when going from a 9x environment to an NT
environment. In any event, uninstalling should be a little difficult, but
there is a tool on the Symantec website called RNAV which should do the trick.

Good luck and let me know how it goes!

I believe the Norton removal tool is actually named RNAV2003.EXE

What is the actual problem with Microsoft Office? That should work
with no difficulties unless it is a very old (e.g. Windows 3.1)
version of Office.

Any additional details you can provide, especially the content of any
error messages, will help to solve the problem.

There is a "last resort" method which will salvage the rest of the
Windows XP install. This involves manually deleting files and folders
and then using a registry cleaner, but lets explore other options a
bit further before we get into that sort of drastic action.

Good luck
