I have a W2k Pro machine that was working fine for about two years. Then I started experiencing numerous errors and the hard drive had numerous errors/bad sectors on it. So I replaced the harddrive and memeory and am still having issues
I did a fresh install on the new harddive, updated W2K with all critical updates, installed my database (A purchased database product that I believe was designed using sybase), backup software, and virus protection. That is all that is on this computer. I noticed that the harddrive had numerous fragmented files on the harddrive after one week of use. So I defragmented with the built in defrag. When I rebooted I got a stop error. I searched for a solution, but did not find one. So I did another install and reloaded the software again. Still numerous fragmented files when I analyze it, but I have not tried to defrag again. No I am getting "Files that are required for Windows to run porperly have been replaced by unrecognized versions" error. I found another posting on this subject, but have not tried the recommended fix to it. yet. The files in the event viewer are xolehlp.dll, xiffr3_0.dll, xcopy.exe, and wupdmgr.exe which are associated with this error
It is driving me crazy. Any ideas?

Scan your PC with an external virus scanner,
e.g. on www.antivirus.com ("free online scan").

Also note that file fragmentation does not affect the
stability of your PC. When you defrag your disk then you
may note a slight increase in speed but nothing else.

I suspect that you have a faulty CD ROM or a faulty Win2000 CD.
Try this:

1. Click start / run / cmd {OK}

2. Type this command:
dir c:\winnt\system32\xcopy.exe
The date stamp should be 7 Dec 1999 12:00. What is it?

3. Pop in your Win2000 CD, then type these commands:
expand d:\i386\xcopy.ex_ c:\xcopy.exe
fc /b c:\winnt\system32\xcopy.exe c:\xcopy.exe > c:\diff.txt
Notepad c:\diff.txt
What do you see?

It is also possible that you're being hacked. Do you have a firewall?
