Why is MSWord so slow to open documents (40 sec. plus)?

It takes my MSWord documents 40 seconds to open, plus it takes 5-6 additional
seconds for the hourglass to disappear. I empty my temp file three times a
week, and defrag whenever it is required. This is driving me nuts. Please
help. Thanks.

If on a network, Word is probably searching for the attached template. Are
you on a network?

garfield-n-odie asked a number of questions which are the key to addressing
