I have a Powerpoint pps file that I created some time ago that will not open
as a show. I went back to the ppt file and made a new pps with a new name but
that didn't help.

I am opening these files by clicking on them from the desktop without having
powerpoint open but they still open as a presentation.

I want to send the file as a show to a client so it's important that it open
as a show

You are confusing me. What is the difference between something opening as a
"show" versus opening as a "presentation"? Try holding down the Shift key
while right clicking a .pps file. Then choose Open With. Make sure you
select the PPT viewer rather than the PPT program as the item to open that
type file with. Put a checkmark before "always use this program to open
this type file". (Perhaps sometime in the past you elected to open .pps
files with the PPT program itself, rather than the Viewer) If you want a
..pps file to play as a "show" or "presentation" after opening it, you have
to have chosen the Viewer as the "program" to open a .pps file.

How PPT treats PPS (show) files is a per-computer setting. It's nothing to do
with the file itself, just how the individual computer's been set to TREAT .PPS
files.

Start PowerPoint, choose Help, Detect and Repair. That should reset the
settings for PPS files on your computer.

Understand that if the settings are amiss on somebody else's computer, there's
not much you can do about it.

Thanks Darrell.

I tried your suggestion but couldn't find the viewer listed as a choice or
when I searched in the program files. Maybe that's my problem. I know that I
use to have the viewer because at one point I made one of the files that
incorporates the veiwer in case you are worried that the person you are
sending it to doesn't have one.

I'll try to find a downloadable viewer.

I thought I was using MS language with show and presentation -- though I
agree with you it does seem confusing. I think you got what I meant however
-- show is a slide show and presentation opens up as a regular file where you
can make changes, add new slides, etc.

Thanks Steve.

I had run Detect and Repair before posting but it didn't solve the problem.
I think the problem is that I don't have a viewer because I don't see one in
the program files. I'll try downloading one.

That's dissappointing news about the program opening based on the settings
of the computer. I thought the whole purpose of the pps file was that you
could send it to someone and they would only be able to see a slide show.

That's not really the answer ... as long as you have PowerPoint, doubleclicking a
PPS (as opposed to PPT) file should cause the presentation to open in Slide Show
view rather than normally (ie, for editing)

Have a look here then:

And normally that's how it'll work. But stuff breaks sometimes. Hey, sometimes
they won't have the computer plugged in and your show won't work then either. ;-)

Thanks Steve.

I tried the website but the page is messed up and not all of it displays.
Unfortunately it is the part with the solution. I got the same page through
the faq too and the same thing happened. I sent an email to tell them about
the problem.

Them is Me and it's fixed now. ;-)

Thanks for taking the time to track me down and let me know about the munged page.

Steve,

Thanks for fixing the page. I was wondering if there was any connection
between the Steve on the discussion board and the steve working at the PPT
website :)

Nothing works. I tried the regserver solution. I got a message that windows
office was configuring but powerpoint never opened up. I had tried detect and
repair before but that didn't work. I went to the file to manually set the
file association. It aleady had powerpoint as the default so I just checked
the Always Open With box.

I'm about ready to give up -- unless you have yet another trick -- and hope
for the best ;it will open correctly on other computers.

Based on what you say, if it's my computer or powerpoint program that is
screwed up then it might open correctly on someone else's computer. However,
if it is the file that is messed up, I'm screwed.

Thanks \ Tim

We talk to one another from time to time. But then one or the other of us takes our
meds and that stops. ;-)

I'm about out of ideas, but most of the time it should work ok on other computers.

Wait, one last notion that may not be on the FAQ page. Is your Windows set to the
default: hide extensions? If so, that might be the problem. You may have renamed

MYFILE[hidden].PPT to add a .PPS extension, but Windows in butthead default mode
would have named it MYFILe.PPS[hidden].PPT

Which'd account for a world of grief.
