Word files that have been saved with .doc extensions are changed to .lnk when
sent as email attachments. These sent files are not openable by the
recipients. I don't know how this change happened, but I want it fixed.

You're currently set up (wrongly it seems) for network operations so that
instead of sending the Word document itself, you're sending a link to it.
Which is fine if the document is saved on a network drive to which the
recipient has access, but useless otherwise.

If you're using Outlook: when you create the email and add the attachment,
click Attachment Options, then select 'Regular Attachments' instead of
'Shared'

Sounds like a good idea, except I find no such option available in Outlook
Express 6. This is new behavior for files I'm sending, and I don't know what
has caused this change. Any other ideas?

I don't know how Outlook Express controls it, but the setting must be there
somewhere. Try Tools > Options or Help looking for 'Shared Attachments' --
at least now you know what to look for,
