Why can't I uncheck RO property on some folders on my C drive ?

I've got a directory tree on my PC that has RO property set that I
can't seem to remove. The files are not RO, just the dirs. This is a
simple XP/pro/SP1a machine. No domain or workgroups. I'm running as
administator and under "security" for a dir it shows "everyone/full
control". Advanced security settings show every box checked for
everyone grouop.

In file explorer properties the dirs have a grey check. If I uncheck
one it and apply, it looks like it worked but when I go back to see
the props it's a grey check, again.

I've tried tricks like forcing recursive RO on, then off. the dos attrib
command shows no R, S, or H bits.

a "attrib -R *.* /D /S" command didn't change anything.

Oh, yea, it's NTFS.

No app software is running that that might have a handle on these
dirs or files. I've looked in task manager to make sure.

Help!!!!

Normal for XP. Ignore the flag on directories. It can be changed for files.
For more, see Kelly's link below, click on "R" and scroll down to READ ONLY.

Today I've discovered this weird property on the folders and you have
kindly pointed me to information about it. I find the KB information
for this problem is cryptic, even for microsoft. So far I haven't
been able to make the check go away.

What a crock.

I'm getting real tired of Uncle Bill's attempts at user-friendly, or
whatever he's up to. To date, I've spent hours trying to find out why an
application that works fine on w2k machines has a problem on XP and who's
sympton looks like the config/state file is RO, but of
course I can text edt it so it's not.

Are you using simple file sharing? It doesn't sound like
it to me. Try this, while in my computer click
tools/folder options\view and scroll down and check the
box for simple file sharing. See if that helps? Also,
when using the security tab features it might help to
experiment with a few test folders and sub folders
adjusting and changing on a small scale to get
comfortable with all the options. Windows XP Inside Out
is great read from MS Press and is a must have.
