Where Did All My E-Mails Go???

B

Brett Weiss

I had to move to a new computer. Exported my calendar, contacts, and
messages to a new PST file as an extra backup. Copied all of the files in
the Documents and Settings\MyName\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook to the
new computer. Everything is fine, except that I'm missing every e-mail from
9/4/04 on (All the contacts, calendar entries and to-dos came through). I
tried importing the backup file--same thing.

For the life of me, I can't figure out what happened (or is happening). I
wasn't using any filter, and all the e-mails were there when I copies the
files.

Help!!!

Do you get the same result if you simply open your .PST file in Outlook via
File | Open? You should never need to import from a .PST -- it's Outlook's
native file format. It would be like importing a .DOC file into Word.

Jocelyn:

Yes, I get the same result--nothing after 9/4/04.

You can try running the Inbox Repair Tool (scanpst.exe) on your .PST to see
if it finds any errors -- allow the program to make a backup of your file
before it makes any changes.

In future, the best practice (not well documented by Microsoft) is to simply
re-use your .PST file but not to overwrite one .PST with another -- you can
just put your original .PST in a location of your choice and then point
Outlook to it.
