Is a special Windows update likely to sneak sp2 on us folk bit by bit as
updates, or do we have to get it in its entirety if we want it. oh, and what
will windows update set to auto be doing from now on xp pro?

To apply SP2 you must accept the EULA so for automatic updates it's not
quite automatic. It isn't available on the WU site yet.

It will offer an opportunity to accept or reject the automatic update -
but I would put updates onto 'ask me before downloading in advance.
Once accepted it will download all that it decides is needed - which may
be 80 to 120 MB, and if the connection is interrupted will carry on from
where it got to after reconnect. Once all is downloaded, it will
install in one operation, which it will ask you to accept before
starting; that is the point at which you should make sure nothing else
is running: it will take around 25 minutes
