When i try to shut down or restart my computer, it brings
up a box that says that its trying to end a program called
"wfet",after the progress bar gets to the end, it says that
the program is not responding and wants me to choose either
to cancel shutdown or end the program to continue with shut
down. ive never heard of this program nor can i find
anything remotely related to it anywhere on my computer.
any help is greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem. I've used ad-aware to try to
find parasites/ cookies, but it doesn't identify any. If
anyone knows what's going on, please help. Thanks very
much.

run MSConfg, the System Configuration Utility appears,
go to the Startup tab and deselect those features you dont want.
When I did this I found where the software was. It was called
"updatestats.exe" location was programfiles/media/media.
I hope this helps

How often are you going to post this? Just try a little patience and
wait for an answer! We are all volunteers here, not Microsoft employees
and this newsgroup gets around 1,000 new postings a day. See if you
have RealOne (or RealPlayer) or Quicktime or some other legitimate
program checking for updates. Uncheck the updatestats entry in
msconfig. Examine the /media folder. Any clues where it came from? What
programs do you have running in the background? In any case, you don't
need to be running a program to update stats for Windows to work
correctly.

YES! I had this problem, was running Windows 2000 with all up-to-date
SP's and alike crap from Microsoft. Yet this little wfet program with
a barcode looking icon was always hosing me up. Then i started
noticing when a site was not found, like "wallmart.com" it would show
up "http:///? www.wallmart.com", so i knew I had a browser hijack
going on...

Download this program called HijackThis:
http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html
147 kb

Now the program itself is a tad difficult to follow if your not
comfortable playing with the "guts" of the machine, but well worth it.
There are these checkboxes beside a lot of crap, like this:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Cmaudio] RunDll32 cmicnfg.cpl,CMICtrlWnd
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdateStats] C:\Program
Files\Media\Media\UpdateStats.exe

I had these programs "Cmaudio" and "UpdateStats" running, one of them
was wfet because when i selected them and hit fix, which by the way
un-registers the keys from the registry and deletes the file, wfet was
no more, and my browser is moving way faster.

For most spyware, browser hijacking tools i'd recommend LavaSoft's
Ad-Aware:
http://www.lavasoft.de

But for some reason it couldnt identify the UpdateStats wfet or the
cmaudio program.

If you need some help at least run HijackThis and save the output of
the "scan" into a logfile, and send it to me, (e-mail address removed), i'll
help ya out.

If it worked let me know :)
