I have four user accounts set up but only one picks up the
number unread e mails and displays on the welcome screen.
I will check the permissions in the registry tonight but
are there any settings in Outlook Express 6 that affect
the way that it populates the registry key?

Hi

You can download TweakUI from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp and when
installed go to Programs>Powertoys for Windows XP>Tweak UI - then go to
Logon>Unread Mail - disable it in the right hand pane.

Otherwise the Unread Mail can be disabled via the Registry - navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\[Your
email address], double click on 'MessageCount' - in the right hand pane -
and change the value to 0(Zero).

***If you do opt for the Registry please 'tweak', please backup the Registry
first. A very good program to do this - as well as being able to restore
it - is ERunt:

Thanks for those links, I will down load the TweakUI
program and give it a go.... my problem is that 3 of the 4
user accounts seemed to have diabled the unread mail
feature all by themselves which is why I was wondering if
it could be an issue in OE 6 not populating these registry
entries?

Thanks again

Hi

In Tweak UI you have two settings:

'Apply settings to all users'
'Apply settings to this user only'

How many of the Accounts have Admin. Privileges? If only yours, you may
have to go the Registry route and then uninstall Tweak UI. If the other
Accounts are 'with Admin Privileges' - think about 'demoting' them to
Limited Users.

Thanks again,

All users have admin privilages at present. Will
the "apply to all users" only work if the other accounts
are "limited" ? or do you think the fact that only one
account is picking up the unread mail information due to
all the accounts being "administrators?

Hi

Yes, all Accounts should be Limited, then if you are the Admin Account, set
that option then uninstall Tweak UI.

Your Account should not be using 'Administrator Account', but a User Account
you have created for yourself.

Wil
I have now tried TweakUI to no avail, tried regedit (having backed up with ERunt) The issue is that all users other than myself do not have a sub key to unread mail containing their e mail client details. It seems that when new user accounts have been created the email client has not been written to the registry. The only thoughts I have.... when new user accounts have been created they too have been created as computer administrators and when OE6 has been started the wizard which prompts to create a new internet connection is cancelled as I use the existing adsl connection from my profile

I will try creating a new user account as limited user..... in the meantime if you have any ideas???

Simon

I think I may have discovered the problem.... created new user account (limited) set up e mail client for pipex .... worked fine... reistry had sub key under unread mail with pipex details etc...THEN added second email account "BtOpenworld" to same identity and this stop the unread message count appearing on the welcome page, infact it hung the count at 2.... reset count in reg but still does not pick up count from OE6..... Guess it will just not work unless I set up a new identity for each e mail account

Any thoughts
