Awhile ago my windows xp was updated and everyonce and
awhile when i played music i'd get this high pitches
scratchy noise instead of music...now it's turned into a
constant stream of high pitched scratching no matter what
i'm doing, word, excel, internet, or just staring at the
desktop... i've checked all the wires and drivers, and
music files and scanned for viruses and blah blah blah...
but no matter what all i get is scratchy scratch cackle
cackle. If anyone has any idea as to what's wrong that'd
be helpful. thanks.

Try muting your microphone. It sounds like you are getting feedback.

i just mute the mic... it doesn't stop

Try a different set of speakers. Did that help? If so, replace the
speakers. Check to make sure the speakers aren't near anything that
could produce interference. Do your speakers have a subwoofer? Make
sure the subwoofer is not close to the monitor. On the soundcard side,
update the drivers from the card mftr.'s website and see if that makes
a difference. What soundcard is it?
