A new threat, the “Surnova worm” has various different guises but is spreading now via instant messaging and the KaZaA file exchange network. It tries to trick people into believing it is a program that can turn your PC into a games console … in particular Microsoft’s Xbox or Nintendo’s Gamecube using filenames such as ‘XBOX emulator(WORKS!!).exe’

It’s reasonably quiet regarding viruses but there are a couple you should be aware of for the future. According to Symantec, the W32.Urick.A@mm is a mass-mailing worm that sends itself to all addresses in the “Microsoft Outlook Address Book”, another reason not to use Outlook.

The email message has the following characteristics: “A Windows Trick” is written in the subject line and although the file name varies, it has the double extension “.jpg.exe” which might fool some people into thinking that a genuine image has been sent. At the moment the threat is considered low.

Symantec has also identified a new Trojan Horse called the “Trojan.Beway”. This Trojan attempts to stop the processes of many other programs and disable security programs. It will also attempt to download a copy of the backdoor Trojan Horse program “Backdoor.Subseven”, this program enables unauthorised people to access your computer over the Internet without your knowledge.
