using word 2003 for the first time

Please, I have a problem with the use of Microsoft word 2003. I have tried
for the past three months to remove CERTAIN CODES that occur when I open a
word document, type and use spacebar. But all have been to no avail.
Please, coud someone help me, in knowing what to do, to turn off or remove
the occurence of the SPECIAL CODES, so that I can use Microsoft word 2003
better.
For, now I use microsoft word XP
