cannot access user's folders, like my doc and windows...

my laptop had a serious hardware problem and could not power up. have important data in laptop's harddrive. so used the harddrive as a USB drive on another PC. all files can be accessed with no problems, except for the following problem. it seems like access to user's folders like the my doc folder is denied. suspect it is due to the start-up password i set on my laptop last time. have tried using the drive as a primary HD on another laptop, but it seems like it cannot be recognised... any ideas on how i may access these important folders

See Help and Support and search for "take ownership"

This is due to the NTFS security permissions on that
storage area. You can regain access by taking ownership.
However, if you plan on using that profile in the existing
laptop system boot, taking ownership on an alien system
will present issues.

You should refer to the recent thread in this newsgroup
