please help, just bought an Epson R300 for a friend, installs and works fine
on my pc, however on her Compaq n800v following the Epson install
instructions exactly I have the following problem, the install procedure
fails to find the printer (which is connected to the usb port)

Instead in device manager there is a request to install a driver for "USB2.0
MFP(Hi-Speed)". which it fails to find on the CD of Epson.

I have tried updating to Windows XP sp2 with no success

So both your computer and hers are running Windows XP, but
the printer works on yours but won't install on hers.

If you have loaded the same drivers on both systems, there
must be something wrong with USB on hers.

I would try looking in the BIOS to make sure that USB is
enabled and that any legacy USB setting is disabled.

Also make sure that the printer settings are correct.
There are usually options for SPP, ECP, EPP, etc. Make
sure the same settings are enabled in her BIOS as are
enabled in your BIOS.

See this page if you don't know anyting about the BIOS:

You could also visit the site of the manufacturer of the
motherboard on her PC for the latest driverupdates for it,
one of which is a USB Controller.

If you need to identify the motherboard manufacturer to
find its site, try using the links to the free utilities
on this page:
