USB freezes after adding an update

My computer came with XP Home and I added several updates OK I think. Then I upgraded to XP Pro and tried to add an update for it. I lost my USBs and couldn't use my mouse which uses an USB port. So I reinstalled XP Pro. I tried installing MS Office Pro 2003 but got a message that an incomplete installation prevents me from installing it

What should I do next?
 
I have the same problem-thought XP pro came on a new computer. I think my
problem occurred when I tried using a CD writer whose driver is being
disabled by XP. I tried uninstalling the device and hunted through the
registry for references and deleted those, but the error message still comes
up whenever I boot up. XP is disabling the drivers because they make the
system unstable. Anyone have ideas??
