USB doesn't work after SP1 installation

I got a new Compaq with XP Home. I installed XP Pro on top of it
(upgrade, not clean install), then installed SP1 from a "Microsoft
Windows Security Update CD". After that installation (and a reboot), USB
doesn't work. My USB mouse doesn't work, nor will a USB "thumb drive",
nor for that matter will a PS/2 mouse work. I started over (restored the
original Compaq image) and did it all again, and the same thing
happened. (USB did work before the XP Pro install and before the SP1
install, although after the XP Pro install it was not "hi-speed" USB.)
Any ideas? TIA - JR
 
Solved it! I did an "update driver" in the Device Manager for the USB
controller, and it magically fixed it! (It was a challenge accomplishing
that without a mouse, but it's possible... ) - JR
