I am about to upgrade my harddrive from a 20 gig to 160 gig. Currently
running Xp Pro with SP2 and lastest updates installed.
What I want to do is transfer all the contents of the 20 gig onto the 160
gig then remove the 20 gig from the system. I've looked in help and support
/knowledge base and they all seem to suggest using the fie transfer wizard,
but the transfer wizard assumes that you are using two pc's and not just one.
Is there a way to move all the contentsincluding hidden files/system
settings within Xp or would I be better with a third party software such as
partition magic?

List of Programs Whose Settings Are Migrated When You Use
the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard

1. Create a new folder on your Desktop and name it.
2. Open XP's Files and Setting Transfer Wizard.
3. Select "Old Computer"
4. Select "Other" and Browse to the Desktop folder you created.
5. The Wizard will create a file in the folder. The file is named
"USMT2.UNC"
6. Record the "USMT2.UNC" file to a CD.
7. When you have reinstalled XP and your programs, open the
Files & Settings Transfer Wizard and select "New Computer".
8. Select "I don't need the Wizard Disk......"
9. Browse to your CD Drive and insert the CD containing the
"USMT2.UNC" file.
10. Your Files and Settings will begin installing on the new drive.

File transfer wizard actually isnt set to use "two pc's" at all,you can set
the
wizard to run pc as old,run youre specified data for it to collect, then
transfer
the new folder you created to a cd.With this cd,one can/could set up any pc
worldwide that runs on xp to run in youre setting(s),plus this makes for a
great back-up if xp should fail or if adding a hd as you are, simply install
xp,
run the wizard, get youre updates and youre set...To transfer old drive to new
completly use XCOPY in xp.Format new drive, set as slave on same IDE chain,
then type in run:XCOPY C:\*.* D:\ /c/h/e/k/r Agree to all in the DOS
window.

The reference to 'old computer' and 'new computer' is just a logical
distinction. FAST creates a data file in the old computer which you then
write to the new one later. Obviously it can be the same computer. In your
case, you only have to decide where you want the file temporarily. If you
bought the retail version of the 160GB hard drive it probably has a cd in it
which has a transfer program that will move the system from the 20GB drive
to the 160GB drive in one operation. If you bought the OEM version then you
are just getting the bare drive.

He wants to transfer *everything*, including the OS, the boot
sector, the MBR - everything - to a new HD. IOW, he wants
to make a clone.
