Upgrading to 2.4/800 processor from uniprocessor causes hangup

I have an Asus P4PE with the 1007 bios that I have tried to upgrade to
hyperthreading with a 2.4 processor. I had expected to have to do a
repair for the os but after inserting the new processor, the computer
loads a driver, reboots and then becomes inoperative. Attempts at
repair/reinstallation of the os (xp pro) hang at various points but
never complete. Bios does show 2 processors. Did full format and
still no go. Reverted back to old processor with repair and it works
ok but I want the hyperthread for processing power for video editing.
Where have I gone wrong? Bad processor? Bad Karma?

No, bad processor choice. The above motherboard doesn't support 800MHz FSB
(400 and 533 only). Specifications here:
