yes you can upgrade from home to pro but , you can't do this the other way
around , pro to home , only works from home to pro ...

Hi,

Sure it's possible, and quite easy. Just make sure the upgrade version has
the same service pack level as the existing installation, otherwise setup
will fail. My only question would be: why?

Will it still retain settings and such?

:

It should, but things can always happen, so if you don't already, now is
a good time to implement a backup strategy so you always have a full
backup of anything you can't afford to loose. Backup before doing the
upgrade.

WinXP is designed to install and upgrade the existing operating
system while simultaneously preserving your applications and data, and
translating as many personalized settings as possible. The process is
designed to be, and normally is, quite painless. That said, things
can go wrong, in a small number of cases. If your data is at all
important to you, back it up before proceeding.

The upgrade from WinXP Home to WinXP Pro, in particular, almost
always goes smoothly, as both operating systems use the same kernel.
