Hello,

I have win98se on a machine and we have just bought a full copy of XP Pro.

What is the way I upgrade so I don't lose my shortcuts etc.

Thanks

Suzanne

Back them up. You should do a clean install of XP instead of a upgrade, or
you will do it in the long run. Is your machine XP ready... what do you
have.

Excellent read for the "about to take the plunge."

Please use your own best judgment before implementing any suggestions or
advice herein.
No warranty is expressed or implied.
Your mileage may vary.
See store for details. :)

Remove shoes to E-mail.

Boot off the XP cdrom and follow the instruction, it will ask you what you
want to do.
Set you bios to boot off the CD rom as the first device.

Back them up.

Good idea. You should always backup anything critical before upgrading.
You should do a clean install of XP instead of a upgrade,

Bad idea, there is no reason to. This is a common misconception. You can
always go back an do a clean install if the upgrade doesn't work. However,
if you do your homework you should have few, if any, problems.
or you will do it in the long run.

Bogus. Even if there is a problem, a repair installation would be
sufficient. The only time I've ever reinstalled is due to a total system
partition corruption or failed hard drive where the original installation is
unrecoverable.
Is your machine XP ready... what do you have.

Good question. This comes back to doing your homework. Make sure the system
is compatible. Run the Upgrade Advisor on the CD to pick up known issues.
Make sure that you have drivers available for unsupported hardware (get
these from the manufacturer). Check software to see if programs are
compatible, some may require a patch or upgrade.

But 95 percent of people don't do their homework, then their system don't
work, and out of panic, they reinstall. I personally would not do a upgrade
for anything, nothing like a fresh install. What you said is correct.

Hi Nick,

Usually, people that find their way to these groups via NNTP (Rock was not
using the web page interface, he/she is using a newsreader) are intelligent
enough to know how to research and do their homework. I try to credit them
with this intelligence.....

Yes and that is a good quality that I should use more and I will. Sometimes
I have been embarrassed when I read back over my post. I will be less
snippy. Later on. :)

First check that the hardware is adequate (*more* than the recommended
128MB RAM; at least 400MHz CPU). Read Gary Woodruff's article on
upgrading to XP at http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpupgrad.htm. Ensure
that you *uninstall* (not merely disable) any Anti-virus; System
Utilities like Norton; CD burning software.

Then from the running 98SE put in the XP CD, take Install when it
Auto-runs (or run setup on it), take Install; continue with New Install.
Have the 25 Character Product Key to hand when asked for - and *don't*
lose it

Hello;
I used the Windows XP Upgrade Advisor recommended by
Steve. It is an excellent program that analyzes your
machine and lets you know the problems you will run
into, and, what to do to circumvent them. It is well
worth looking into it.
Good luck.
