Im getting periodic harddrive activity, despite no applications running. All
my drives are defragged. It happens approx every couple of hours, and it
lasts for 3/4 mins. Have disconnected my network/Internet cable, but it
still buzzes away.

What seivices, apart from defrag would cause this. Does system backup and
restore work this frequently. Can I do anything about it?

Thanks ina advance.

A possibility is the search indexing feature. This goes through all
your document and similar files regularly, building indexes to speed up
searching them on the basis of 'test contained'. Unless you have a very
large library of such documents (ie an Office) this is probably not
worth it. Go to Control Panel - Admin Tools services, double click
'Indexing Service' and then click Stop, and set the 'Startup type' to
Disabled, then click Apply
