unknown processes

When I bring up Windows Task Messenger, I find that there
are over 50 processes that I don't know how got there.
What are they and are they a problem?

50 is quite high, with a normal system just booted with
a few apps installed that start automatically being more
on the order of 20ish.
However, we cannot see your list, so we really cannot
answer your question.
