I was advised by someone at a computer shop that I could install win xp and
still use win 98. Well I must have missed a turn somewhere. XP works
wonderfully, much faster than win 98 etc. But having both takes up a lot of
space.

So I'm trying to delete win 98 off my system. I've tried a quick and dirty
(deleting) but it says "cannot delete - files or programmes are in use"
(something like that).

I've had to reinstall programmes anyway for xp. Would the registry for xp be
the same for win 98? Are win98 and xp using the same entries? If win 98 was
deleted would I loose or have to reinstall programmes again?

Do I have to get a proprietary uninstall programme to unistall win 98 or is
there an easier way?

It sounds like if you upgraded Windows 98 to Windows XP. In this case
you do not have to remove Windows 98. Read "How to Remove the Windows
XP Uninstallation Files" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308008).
