My network icon has a "limited or no connectivy" restriction on it. When
I try to "repair" network it tells me that it cannot be repaired because
the IP address cannot be renewed. I can allocate an IP addess to the 2
machines networked and all works as it should. However as soon as I put
on "Internet sharing" the problem returns. Both have SP2 and firewall
disabled or enabled makes no difference.

hope someone can piont me in right direction

This happens when in a network you disable or enable internet sharing on the
host PC after the network wizard has assigned IP addresses to both PCs. In
such case you take the following action:

Disable Internet sharing on PC No. 2 that has been asked to share the
internet connection on PC #1
Enable internet sharing on PC # 1 if disabled.
If this does not solve the problem then disable internet sharing on both Pcs
and run network setup wizard again. After the setup is complete make sure you
do not disable internet sharing again on the host PC or enable internet
sharing on the 2nd PC.
