Two Controlsets

Hi

I was having a few problems with my optical drives and, thanks to Kelly's
Web site, I found the fixes I needed. One of the things I had to do was
change a key in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CONTROLSET but I have found there
are 2 complete Controlsets in my registry, one named controlset001 and one
controlset003.

Both have the same keys and values in them (I checked a few between the two
sets) but I don't know which one XP is using - or even if it's using both.
Can anyone tell me how I would find this out and also any ideas on how the
key has come to be repeated in this way?

it would be helpful if you could share with us the exact patch you
downloaded or the instructions.

BTW, The patch provided frm Kelly's website should be vbs file. You just
need to double click it and restart the machine to fix the issue.

I didn't use a vbs patch and the fix required is irrelevant as I noticed the
key duplication before I made any changes. I would just like to know how to
find out which of the two sets of values XP is reading or whether it's using
both. Also, any ideas on how this duplication might occur would be welcome.
If I can find out that only one set of values is being used I can then try
backing up and removing (or renaming) the other set to discover whether
there is any adverse effect. I would imagine start-up would be a bit
quicker for one thing.

I could try making a simple change in one set of values and then the other
in turn to see which one caused a change (say, turning auto-run off), but if
this worked and I found that only the 001 set was being read for that
function I would still not know whether XP was using values from 003 for
other functions.

Btw the value changes I eventually made in controlset001 & 003\cdrom based
on Kelly's advice fixed one specific problem with the optical drives -
TweakUI was disabling auto-run as requested but would not re-enable it when
asked to do so - I needed to know where the value change was to do so
manually.

Oops. I am sorry not sure how I missed this post.

The two copies of ControlSet, to my knowledge should be a backup copy which
Last Known Good configuration recovery option uses. This is the only thing
that would backup a copy of sucessfully started configuration settings so
that it can be used later when you experience problems starting the computer.

So deleting this key would not be good idea.

The current key used should be Controlset001 anyway.
