turning tower speaker on/off?

Hello:

I always forget how to do this when it happens occasionally. I know how
to turn the speakers on the desktop on and off, the ones that play all the
programs sounds. but there is a 2nd speaker in the computers tower itself. I
usually have it off. Yesterday, I ran a 3rd party program, that supposed to
get rid of unwanted files, and make your computer run more effeciently. It
did give me back over a gig, and a half of HD space, which was/is great. But
now I hear my tower speaker dialing up whenever I go on line. I also know
that at times you need to have that speaker on. But for the most part I don't
want to hear my computer dialing, squaking, and screaching.
How do I turn off the speaker in the tower? and do I do the same thing to
turn it back on when needed?

Most Volume control mixers have a "Slider" for PC Speaker.
Open Control Panel, Sounds, Advanced. If the Slider for PC
speaker isn't visible, click Options and scroll through the list &
check/tick "PC Speaker". Afterwards, pull the PC Speaker
Slider to Zero and then check the box "Mute".

I forget the exact steps because I haven't used dial up modems in four
years, but you have to enter the command ATM into the modems advanced
properties (using modem icon in the control panel).
