Turn off Prefetch?

I am having a problem with an application I use on my XP machine. I enter
data on a weekly basis and when I open it next time it gives an error message
that it was 'incorrectly shutdown' and when It opens my last weeks data is
lost so I have to enter that again before I can do the new entries.
After many discussions with support staff from the company who wrpte the
application, they suggested that I "turn off" prefetch and sent me a small
program to run which would do this for me.
What effect will 'turning off' prefetch have on the working of my computer?
I dont have problems with any other app's so I cannot understand why I have
to do it for this one.
Can anyone help please.

XP basically places shortcuts(?) to programs that you open frequently in the
prefetch folder for a faster access time.
The only thing that will happen is it will take a little longer to access that
program.
