Trying to install XP upgrade.

I bought XP upgrade at Sam's the other day. My current
system is Windows 98. I installed the upgrade, and when I
did, the internet wouldn't work. It was as if I had no
modem. I went back to 98. Tried to install XP again, and
this time I read the message about my modem. It said that
XP might not work with some additional files. My modem is
a Rockwell HCF DAta Fax PCI, 56K.
Called support( no telling how much my phone bill will
be). Got a case number (SRX031029604449)and was
transferred to somebody in support. Waited 20 minutes or
so and finally hung up. Now, when I try to get help
online, I have to provide a product ID that I can't
provide because I haven't installed the upgrade due to the
potential problem. I don't know what to do. I'm getting
sick of the whole thing and I'm about to tell Microsoft
to "shove it". Is there anyone out there who can help?

All you had to do was perform a web search to obtain Windows XP
compatible drivers for your modem....took me 2 minutes!
