Many of the items listed in the Processes list are system ones and shouldn't
be stopped. You can try looking through the list for things you "know" you
don't always need running constantly eg download managers, real network
monitors etc On my pc I have 30 processes listed, of those Mailwasher, AVG
antivirus, ZoneAlarm and 2 or 3 "user" programs are pretty safe to end. I
would leave the remaining ones alone.
It does sound like a pretty feeble excuse by AOL tech support though. Before
you start stopping anything, make sure you run your upto date virus scanner
to make sure it's not something like msblast worm that's causing the
shutdown.
