System Restore

I had a computer Guru to my home to do a fixit. He created a restore point.
Later I tried to restore to that point and could not do it. I have never been
able to use system restore. A few days later, I reformatted and created a
restore point. It seems to work, as his did. It is still working. What was
wrong? If it happens in the future how do I get it going without reformatting
my drive?
I wasted 100.00 on the Guru!

System Restore is a "Backup on Training Wheels", you'd be better served
with a ~$50 investment in Acronis True Image.

I don't agree. System Restore is not any kind of backup at all It's not
meant as a complete backup solution and shouldn't be compared to backup
software. System Restore backs up the system only, and does *nothing* to
back up your data, which should be the primary objective of all backup
software.

I think that's mixing up up Apples with Oranges. It doesn't have to be one
*or* the other. Yes, by all means use the backup software of your choice
(and Acronis True Image is an excellent choice; I use it myself), but also
keep System Restore in place as a quick way to get you out of trouble if you
need to revert the operating system to a previous state.

A variety of factors can mess up system restore. When that happens the
easiest solution is to turn off System Restore, and turn it back on. That
will delete all the current restore points. There are other possible
solutions. See this link for a good overview of system restore and how to
troubleshoot it.

Hi,

There are several possibilities.

Here are some troubleshooting steps to take when System Restore fails to
restore:
http://bertk.mvps.org/html/srfail.html

And here are some tips on adjusting disk space usage and keeping System Restore
healthy:
http://bertk.mvps.org/html/healthy.html

It would also be a good idea to test SR from time to time.

Create a new restore point named TEST.
Create a new shortcut on the desktop and point it to My Computer or any other
file of your choice and name it TEST.
Now restore to the Test restore point.
The system will now reboot, and you will receive a message if the restore was
successful, and the Test shortcut on the desktop will be gone.
