System restore wont restore....

Can someone explain to me how to get System Restore to actually
restore/work? It sets the restore dates automatically but I get the error
that it "couldn't restore" the system. The help-file doesn't explain what
to do in this case. How do I get system restore to restore?

Also how do I get the *&^%$#@ sign on window to go away when I turn the PC
on? I'm the only one using this PC and this window suddenly appeared again
this past week. I can't find any info on getting rid of it again, nor can I
do a system restore to get rid of it.

Thanks

There may be corrupted data in system Restore.
Turn off/on System Restore to delete corrupted files:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.
Click System Restore Settings on left side.
Check "Turn off System Restore", click OK, follow prompts and reboot.
This deletes ALL Restore Points including corruption.
Then go back and turn on system Restore and create a Restore Point.
Otherwise:

Sign on:
Start/Run
Type "control userpasswords2" ENTER
Uncheck "Users must enter..."
Click OK and follow prompts.

I did as you advised and reset System Restore. Of couse now they're gone
and I can't restore the system to get rid of the sign-on window since the
advice below didn't work - please see below...
Sign on:
Start/Run
Type "control userpasswords2" ENTER
Uncheck "Users must enter..."
Click OK and follow prompts.

What am I supposed to put in the prompt window? When I left it blank it
still came up after I rebooted and said "Unable to log on because of an
account restriction" so I still had to type in *owner* to use the PC. What
do I type in the prompt to get rid of this sign-in window when I turn on my
PC? It doesn't say what to type there to get rid of it.

I forgot to add that *I did* uncheck "Users must enter..." but the prompt
didn't explan what to do next to get rid of the sign-on window.

For system restore issues see this link:
http://home.earthlink.net/~mvp_bert/html/srfail.html

For the login issue:

1. Go to Start | Run and type in: control userpasswords2 | Ok.

2. On the Users tab, clear the Users Must Enter A User Name And Password
To Use This Computer check box and then click OK.

3. In the Automatically Log On dialog box that appears, type the user
name and password for the account you want to be logged on each time you
start your computer.

You can accomplish the same thing by:

Download and install tweakui for xp and use its auto logon feature.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

Lastly you can add the Dialog box that comes up when running control
userpasswords 2 to the Control Panel with the following tweak:

Add Control User Passwords2 to the Control Panel (Line 1)

** What does that mean? What is a User ID of a profile? I want the window
to *stop* coming up altogether like before - when I turn the PC on. I
would hit the start button and it would boot up without any sign-on window
coming up first.
Also enter the appropriate password if applicable.

** I don't have a password. I want this window to stop coming up when I
turn my PC on. That's why I tried to do a system restore (that failed.)

## I did unchek the "Users must enter.." Then check what box? The same
one I just unchecked????

## I don't have a user name and password. It just says OWNER in the top box
where you type. How do I STOP this window from coming up each time I boot
my PC. This sign-on window crap just started last Saturday after installing
Norton Ghost. Uninstalling Ghost didn't help and System Restore wouldn't
work.
You can accomplish the same thing by:
Download and install tweakui for xp and use its auto logon feature.

## Please,... I'll end up locking myself out of my PC altogether.

## I don't understand the above. I'd be adding something to my PC I know
nothing about. How do I just GET RID of the sign-on window when I boot my
PC? Why do I suddenly need a "passwords2" (whatever that is) on here after
2 years of not having this sign-on window appear?

How do I follow what I don't understand? Suddenly I need something called
"password2" (a tweak?) to get rid of the sign-on window? I did uncheck the
box on the password window but the sign-on window still comes up. I never
had a password. Now, suddenly I have to type in OWNER to get my PC to boot.
How do I stop this sign-on window from coming up when I boot my PC? I don't
understand this "password2" tweak thing.....

Based on the number of posts you've made about these problems lately,
you really need to take the machine to a computer professional (not
your local equivalent of BigStoreUSA) and have it put right. Or have
the professional come on-site and put things right and give you some
training. I am not saying this to hurt your feelings, but there are
limits to the usefulness of trying to solve some problems via Usenet
postings. Someone on-site is going to be able to help you quickly and
that is your best course of action now.

Good luck,

Malke

That's just what I did this morning. Somehow I was signed on as User in
one place and Administrator in another place. This was making the sign-on
window come up. He fixed it.

Thanks
