After installing the latest XP update for the Sasser virus
using autoupdate, I get the following 2 problems:
(I run up to date Norton and have also just completed an
online scan with PC-cillin)

1) If no keystrokes or mouse action, system reboots after
16 minutes and 10 seconds (give or take a few seconds)

The following is set:
power management OFF
Screensaver = None
Monitor power = always on
Hibernate Disabled

2) XP updates no longer work - I get an error when trying
to install from this site.

Any suggestions?

What's the error,Gerry?

I can guarantee the MVPs will need it.

Manwhile,I'll run a virus search within the terms
described.Nothing rings a bell,though.

Hi Sadie - thanks for the quick reply.

I get the following error from the XP update site when
trying to update the 2 drivers:

"No Updates Were Installed

The following items failed to install. To try installing
them again, click Review and install updates, and then
click Install Now again.

Silicon Image storage software update released on February
03 2004.
Creative Technology Ltd. multimedia software update
released on June 18 2002."

Please note that I manually downloaded the XP Sasser patch
and then when I received the autoupdate notice the next
day, the system rebooted when I tried to autoinstall the
patch (even though it was already installed manually by me
the day before) - it has been doing the unattended 16
minute reboot ever since.

I also use the Norton Firewall and have run an updated
scan with Ad aware 6)

Yes I installed and ran the Norton Sasser removal tool and
the f-secure sasser scanner - all was clean - so I know
that Sasser is not the problem - as I say - it all started
immediately with the XP Sasser patch.

O.K.I am not certain why a driver update wouldn't
install,but let's leave that aside for a moment.You'd be
better off downloading them direct from the
manufacturer,anyway,but don't tell Microsoft I said that.

Right. There are *lots* of people with problems installing
the "Sasser patch".Does it appear that the patch has
installed,finally?

Did you scan at Windows Update to be certain?
Sometimes,it appears updates get caught in a "loop".In
that instance, you need to uninstall the applicable number
via add/remove programmes,then reinstall it,via the site.

Let's not be hasty, tho'.This is a critical patch that you
do NOT want to be removing if there's no need.

It is possible one of the many lsass exploits got into
the system prior to it being patched. Here's the standard
drill:

Disable system restore before attempting any virus
removal.Here's how:

http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/sfc_dis1.shtml

If you do not have a third party firewall enabled, turn on
the inbuilt XP firewall:

Useful tool for virus detection/removal,best downloaded
and saved to floppy:

Stinger:

Please run a virus scan at any of the locations below:

Trend:
http://housecall.antivirus.com
http://housecall.trendmicro.com

McAfee:
http://www.mcafee.com/myapps/mfs/default.asp

Panda:

If the system proves clean, the real tech heads will have
to take charge.

Well, that's good news in a way.The first thing the
experts will say is that it is Sasser. Now you can state
that it is NOT.

Bearing in mind that there's an issue with accelerating
reboots-the best advice I can offer is to call
Microsoft,before it gets any worse.

Hopefully, the MVPs'll step in and start answering you now
you've done all the groundwork.

Did you scan at Windows Update to confirm the patch was
successfully installed?

Thanks for your help - I decided to use the Restore feature
and chose last Sunday's points - after doing the
processing thing, it came up stating that nothing was
changed in the system - however, I have tested the system
for two 30 minute intervals and "no more shutdown"!

The autoupdates still gave an error message but I was able
to manually download and intall both of the outstanding
fixes - without a crash!

So at this point, all appears fine again - I am going to
leave the PC running all night for a final test.

Thanks again
