System error after Norton 2005 installation

My BiL has just installed Norton 2005 AV and PF on his family pc and now
gets a system error message when booting up that the password does not
match. The machine then keeps looping round. This did not happen when
booting up after installing AV but only after installing PF.

Any ideas, other than reinstalling XPHome?

From what I was told, the machine was inundated with spyware and trojans
and I had offered to clean it up first prior to installing any AV
software.
