I just received an email from Sygate promoting their new Fix-It Utilities 5.
It appears to be similar to Norton Utilities & Anti Virus in tasks
performed. I am curious if anybody knows anything about this program. I have
used Norton products for years, but I keep hearing it slows the machine down
somewhat.

I am wondering if this is a good alternative.
I am running Windows XP Pro sp1.

Any info appreciated - TIA

The best utility today is System Mechanic (www.iolo.com) .
Try it free for 30 days.

I have installed that on my sisters machine and seems to do the job well. I
can't give you any specifics on memory usage or CPU cycles, but I would
recommend it over Norton anyday. She has a teenager who refuses to give up
the P2P sites and it has caughlt all viruses as they were downloading or
before they could be executed. It also comes with a handful of useful
utilities as well.

Sygate might be promoting it, but Fix-It Utilities is a V-Com product
(http://www.v-com.com/product/fi_ind.html). I remember seeing this one
a couple years ago and panned it. Previously it was Ontrack that owned
this product. Ontrack got it from Mijenix when Ontrack acquired
Mijenix. Don't remember the product before its Mijenix owner. It keeps
changing hands.

Just where on the sygate.com domain did you see Sygate recommending a
need for Fix-It Utilities? I don't see how it meshes with their product
family.

Vanguard,

It is a V-Com product - you are right there.
I got an email from Sygate Technologies, Inc

"Don't wait! Sygate is bringing you Fix-It Utilities for $29.95 - Buy
Today!"

This was the subject of the email - I have no clue how it relates to their
products

i have been using fix it 4 for 2 years and went to 5 this year. as far as i'm concerned, it has the best antivirus software there is. however, since it should be vcom and not sygate, i'm not sure what you're looking at. since vcom took over, i have had nothing but trouble with tech support. the box said fully supports ntfs when if you try to make backup disks it says only for fat\fat32.
i asked them about it and one said it's possible if i boot? another told me to go to norton and remove viruses? another said it never supported ntfs. i currently have the ftc on their behinds. they were a bunch of smarta$$ replies mocking any questions i had. i contacted the manager and told him about this and all he replied with is sorry, do you have a question? a year ago i would have said it was the best. this year i would say stay clear of it.

Wow. That means the six years I have been using it reliably have be
superstitious? You panned it...how impressive.

Fix_It Uitlities works fine with NTFS. I have been using it with NTFS
on XP home for quite a while. It does not make rescue disks for any
Windows XP system as they cannot be done (Norton doesn't either).

that's fine but when i try to run defrag or fix wiz it says does not support ntfs also. there is an error on the disk and anyway, my biggest complaint was with tech support. there were many other issues besides the ones i named. i do not complain about a company unless i should. when i asked about fix wiz and defrag i recieved no response except one saying (i don't know) is that the way a company should treat the customers?
