Please excuse the spelling because this message was type
in a hurry with wife biteing at my heals to get off ;P

System:

Pavilion 550n
40 GB HD
1.8 ghz AMD processor
512 RAM

Recently I ran into a problem that rendered my computer
slower then usual but somewhat tollerable untill my
registry went currupt.

For some reason our good buddies at HP stopped handing out
system recovery disk's to fix the common file/directory
currupt systems so I figured this would be a perfect time
to go ahead and upgrade to Windows XP Pro other then
sitting there on the phone translating english(forgein)
back into english(Native) over a long-distance phone call
to god knows where when I knew all they where going to do
is tell me to load the diagnostic disk I obtained from
another recent mishap and type "chkdsk /p" (15 min
process) only to get an unrecoverable system error
responce (very first thing I did) aswell as the high phone
bill AGAIN...

I bought brand new MS WINXP PRO software, Completly
formated the hard drive(40gb), created 2 almost equal
partitions incase I wanted to install another operating
system at a later date but for somereason my system has
slowed down dramaticly IE: Clicking on the start button
takes 30 seconds(minimum) for the window to raise and
hitting ctrl+alt+del takes 5 mintues to load task manager
and I cannot find any explanation for it... Please if
anyone thinks they might know whats wrong, read what I've
done below to fix the problem and please respond to
(e-mail address removed) asap because I feel this may be my best bet
on getting any real technical advice...

Note: Everything listed below was done in order and within
the first few hours of windows being installed to see if I
could improve the systems preformace...

PS: IBM I am so sorry for not being a returning customer
and I promise ill never let you down again and even use
this message to promote more buys for you guys for
creating a fantastic stable machine like my old IBM
Aptiva ;P

1. Enabled firewall and plugged cable modem back in
2. Downloaded all windows critical updates
3. Downloaded latest nVidia graphic drivers
4. Downloaded and ran Mcafee virus removal and blaster
like worm anti-virus programs...
5. Cleared everything out of startup (Startup folder,
registry keys, and win.ini)
6. Uninstalled/disabled nvidia graphic card
7. Reinstalled/Enabled graphic card
8. Uninstalled NIC Card and hooked DSL up through USB port
9. Disabled Numerous services from the control panel...
you can find the list of services I disabled here

10. Disabled/Enabled page fileing
11. Disabled/Enabled the file indexing service
12. Slamed computer on the floor a cupple times (j/k);P
13. Typed Fixmbr at command prompt
14. Reformated, updateing and installing windows 3 more
times

I did all this in a timely manner rebooting the PC after
every drastic change but nothing helps, the processor
states im only using 0% - 5% of my resources but the
system runs slower then my (IBM Aptive 133mhz) I've had
for 6 years thats even survived a lightning strike that
took out the removable disk drives and PCI ports and is
still kicking it with a dead battery.

Keep in mind I have the very minimum amount or progams and
services running and there is only 1 thing I can think of
that I havnt checked yet that might be throwing my system
off but I cant see why it would be affecting my pc now
even though im not sure I really did this but I may have
got a stick of SDRAM mixed up with the factory DDRAM
installed on the pc when I compared the sticks together
but im not certain this would effect anything or that I
even really did this.

Someone please help, all advice is greatly appreciated.
and special thanks in advance to all who read this message

Ken,

I think you just gave the answer yourself. Don´t mix two types of memory. If
you have to sticks of memory from 256MB each, then remove the SDRAM stick
and reboot. XP should run smoothly on a 256MB machine. If it does, check
brand and type of your motherboard and look at the manufacturers´ site for
the specifications of the supported RAM. Then buy the proper type of RAM.

Best regards,

Ben
