suddenly my excel workbooks are "shared workbooks"

I'm the only user on my computer but suddenly my excel 2003 workbooks are
shared workbooks. Because of this I'm unable to edit, center and merge is
greyed out. How do I correct this problem?

There are other things you can't do if your workbooks are shared. To
un-share one, activate it, choose Tools | Share Workbook, click the Editing
tab if necessary, clear the "Allow changes ..." checkbox, click OK, click
Yes. So doing should also automatically re-save the workbook, but it
wouldn't hurt to do so explicitly
