Hi,
I'd be really grateful if someone could help me out with this...
I have a WinXP Pro system and a cable modem. Recently, my computer lost its
ability to connect to the internet at boot-up. The computer hangs for about
60 seconds, but consistently fails. Running ipconfig returns a
169.254.xx.xx address. If I type "ipconfig/renew", I receive the following
message after another 60 seconds:
"An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : unable
to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out."
Here's the strangeness - if I disable/enable the network (by right-clicking
on Local Area Connection in Network Connections), OR if I simply physically
unplug and re-plug the ethernet cable, the network is detected and
everything works perfectly until the next time I reboot.
This problem is driving me nuts. It started after I temporarily switched
from cable modem to ADSL to compare the performance rates. In order to get
the ADSL service working I installed the CD that came with the kit - stupid
mistake. So, I know this is some bizarre software problem related to
whatever changes the CD made. Thing is, I can't find anything different
about the system. I have tried all kinds of potential solutions -
uninstalled/re-installed my network card, uninstalled/reinstalled TCP/IP,
experimented with every combination of TCP/IP settings, and more. Normally
getting the cable modem to connect is a no-brainer - it accepts the default
WinXP settings from the get-go.
Can anyone help me out with this?? I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Rob
