startup programs

Hello,

With XP, startup programs can be seen in msconfig or in the startup folder.
What is the difference?

Thanks,
Talal Itani

The major difference is that MSCONFIG shows both programs being launched
from the startup folders and launched from the registry as well.

Some programs load up through the registry, which isn't in the Startup
folder. And MSCONFIG sees both of them.

Msconfig is intended as a troubleshooting tool, not as a tool for routinely
managing startup programs. That should be done through the options in the
individual programs, managing the startup folders or through the registry.

I would like applications to load at startup, like Outlook, Explorer, Word.
Is the startup folder intended for such a task? I need these startup
applications to start in a specific order. Thank you.

Yup

I need these startup applications to start in a specific order.

Don't use the Startup folder.

Yes but you can't control the startup order using the startup folder. Use a
batch file for that, though I don't understand what possible difference it
could make what order the three you listed started in.

There are also many utilities out there that will control the start
order. I use one along these lines that delays the start order of some
applications like Mathon, Yahoo Messenger, Trillian, and Outlook
Express. As I use AltDesk ($15) and they only startup when I select a
given virtual desktop for the first time.

I like my applications icons on the Taskbar to be in a specific order, so
that I can click on an icon without much looking, thinking, and delay. I
wonder if there is a way to change the order ot icons on the Taskbar. Batch
file, like from the days of DOS?

That would be one way to do it I would think.

might try Task Scheduler and adjust the delay for the programs to start at log on so the load order will be what you want.
task scheduler requires a logon password to be available before the task will run.
if you do not have one set up, you can do so and then use TweakUI to auto logon.
